Last week Mexico was hit by heavy rains that caused several of the dams along the Rio Grande to be let down. This caused major flooding in Piedras, Saltillo, Monterrey and even as far south as Mexico City. Piedras had some roads closed for about a day but currently all the bridges leading back into the city and the US have been reopened. There is still a question about whether more flooding with come. The dam is at capacity and needs to be let down. If more rain comes the levees will break and the flood would be severe. This happened in the 1960's and all of Piedras was destroyed. The flooding south of the Piedras is having other affects as well. There is a gas and food shortage. No tractor trailers can travel from the south to deliver materials to the northern cities. Right now all the grocery stores are bare of fruits and vegetables. Even Wal-Mart in Eagle Pass is completely out of eggs. We are praying that this clears up and the city will be up and running again shortly. The pictures below are of the Rio Grande last Monday. There is usually a golf course below the bridge. Obviously the holes in one will be on hold for awhile.
